Adaptive Contention Window based MAC Protocol for Periodic Data Collection Applications in WSNs |
|
Contention based medium access protocols are of interest in low data rate wireless communication scenarios. In most cases of periodic data collection applications, nodes produce small data packets which are collected by cluster heads and routed to base station. We propose a new mechanism for selecting the contention window adaptively that changes its size adaptively with the number of nodes willing to send data. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the new protocol reduces data collection time significantly in comparison to recently proposed Synchronized, Shared Contention Window (SSCW) based DCF and IEEE 802.11 for similar application scenarios. It also ensures lesser number of collisions in periodic data collection process. Moreover, its adaptive nature makes network easily scalable and more suitable for larger networks. |
