How to subscribe to Collabra News groups using Outlook Express

Note this approach is only necessary if you decided to subscribe via downloading a list of newsgroups from the server (see previous Configuration page).

Step 1

For example to read GCO1063 from semester 1 2004, highlight each group in turn (or use Shift, click to select all the relevant groups) and then select Subscribe

Important note: Some units may not have assignment newsgroups as shown below.

Select OK. This will return you to the main Outlook Express window with the news entry for Collabra showing the groups you have just subscribed to:

An alternative and quicker way to subscribe, is go to your subject WWW page and click on the newsgroup links from this page.

IMPORTANT ISSUE - Loss of past news articles

It is very important that as part of your Outlook Express set-up you ensure Outlook Express does not automatically remove old news postings. To do this select Tools - Options - the Maintenance tab and ensure 'Delete news messages'  is not checked.

If you have inadvertently left this on, you will need to first remove the check against Delete as above, and then in Outlook right click each newsgroup you wish to reset, select Properties, select Local File and then select Reset.

This will cause Outlook Express to re download the entire newsgroup next time you connect to the server.

Step 2

To read a particular group, select the group in the Folders window and the news items will be listed in the right hand panel:

To read a particular item, highlight the item and read in the lower pane, or double click to open it in a new window. Clicking on a + symbol in the items window will present all the items in a particular thread:

Step 3

You can post a new message to the selected news group (Folders panel) by clicking on the New Post task button:

Or post a follow up to the currently highlighted message by selecting the Reply Group button:

If you use the Reply button, an email reply will be sent to the author of the currently highlighted item, rather than a news post.
