1. IT Policy Students are required by Monash University to familiarize themselves and comply with the University IT policy. This is available online:
http://www.adm.monash.edu.au/unisec/pol/itec12.html
The School has also established additional guidelines for use of the IT facilities it provides to its HDR students.
Printers:
A networked printer is available in 7N-207 for use by all HDR students. A supply of paper is stored in the print room and replenished on a regular basis. If additional paper is required students are asked to order from the GSIT Administrative Officer.
In addition other networked printers are also available in the Main GSIT print room located in 4N-. It is recommended where large print jobs are required that the high speed printer/copier be used in the 4N building so as not to impede the flow of work to the 4N printer.
IT Accounts
All HDR students are provided with a Monash IT account. In addition some students are provided with an additional Monash staff IT account where they are employed as sessional staff. The staff account should only be used to undertake the tasks required as a sessional staff member.
Internet Access
Student accounts are provided by the Faculty with a free internet quota of $125 per semester. Students are able to monitor their internet usage for both their staff and student accounts through my.monash portal. Students are unable to monitor any traffic on their IP address.
Students are responsible for any internet charges exceeding the agreed total of $125 per semester. This includes the total of the student, staff accounts and IP accounts. It is strongly recommended that students always use their student IT account for their research studies as this will ensure that you do not exceed the limit. If additional internet quota is required the school will review any recommendation for additional internet quota submitted by the supervisor.
Software:
Individual computers for HDR students will be set up with the required software as requested by your supervisor. If additional (required) software is to be loaded (including downloading freeware from the internet) you must obtain approval from your supervisor. All software used by you will be registered on the Research database. This will enable both staff and students to identify specific software that is in use by another and seek feedback on its use.
Back-up:
It is the responsibility of each student to undertake regular back-ups of his/her work. A number of DVD burners are available in the 7N building for the purpose of backing up. It is recommended that students undertake daily incremental back-ups. In addition you are required to undertake a complete back-up on a monthly basis. One complete back-up copy is to be provided to the CSOs for secure storage. A second backup DVD should be stored by you off the University premises.
2. Telephone All HDR students are provided with access to a University funded telephone for the purpose of completing research activities. The school will pay for telephone calls up to a maximum of $20 per month. Students will be asked to reimburse the school for any calls in excess of this amount. Additional telephone quota may be granted if prior approval is obtained from the supervisor for certain specific requirements.
To minimize the cost of your call to Melbourne , dial 0 03 before the Melbourne number, so that the call will go through Monash exchange and will be treated as a local call.
